Sharp-tailed Grouse at Namekagon Barrens Wildlife Area in Burnett County Wisconsin on April 26, 2026

I decided to try for the Sharp-tailed Grouse at Namekagon Barrens Wildlife Area in Burnett County. This bird is considered a Special Concern species in Wisconsin. They have a blind and I got on this idea back in March when they were available to book. A very nice program they have to see this species. I need the Sharp-tailed Grouse for a Wisconsin life bird and this is one way to try for it. I asked Jacob C. if he wanted to come along and he jumped at the opportunity. What is required for this blind opportunity is you must be in the blind at 4:30 am as they want you in your blind 1 hour before sun up so you are settled in when the birds come to the area for their courtship displays at sunrise. The birds showing up to me, this is never a given with wildlife. So we went up a day early and did some scouting around at Namekagon WA which is about 6,500 acres. Just walking around we raised 4 birds, watched them fly off to other areas, it was very exciting. We also wanted to try for them a day early as a 95 percent chance of rain was predicted for the next morning. The next morning we walked 15-20 minute walk in the dark to the blind just before 4:30 am. All of the sudden around 5:30 just getting light 17 birds showed up and they were making a ton of noise and a lot of action too doing their thing. It was very low light at that time but a couple photos were captured as it started to rain. As the rain came, the birds stood still, the displaying was over. The just stood there for about 15 minutes. All of the sudden they all flew off the it was game over. We hung around for over an hour but the birds never returned. We felt the event was complete other than great photos of some of the action as it was too dark when the show was on. The experience was complete because we heard all the displaying sounds, we saw the action, we experienced the walking the land and kicking up a few birds a day earlier which anyone would do walking a wildlife area. I got my Wisconsin life bird #390. It was a couple cold days of high in the low 50’s with steady 8-9 mile an hour winds out of the east Sunday day 1, and Monday a little less winds but wet and cold early morning. Wild Turkey with eggs in the nest in Marquette County Wisconsin on May 19, 2025

While out birding in Marquette County I flushed a Wild Turkey and my first thought this time of year that there is a nest close by. About 20 feet away from me under an old fallen tree was a nest. I took a couple of quick photos and left the area. It was an overcast day and cold with a good NE wind at times making it chilly. Images were taken on May 19, 2025.

Chukar in Racine County Wisconsin on September 26, 2019

The Chukar, a Eurasian species introduced here in the US is considered a released game bird here in Wisconsin. I found this adult feeding along a roadside in Racine County this morning eating seeds. It put on a nice show eating seeds as I watched it at a distance. I am posting this as some birders have never seen one so it is for educational purposes I would say. It was a gorgeous fall like morning with sunny skies, temps around 60 and very little wind. Images were taken on September 26, 2019.

Wild Turkeys at the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center in Milwaukee Wisconsin on November 30, 2018

One of my birding stops today was the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center. It was a quiet day there birding like most places this time of year. The highlight was a flock of Wild Turkeys back in the woods near a ravine. I stopped on the opposite side of the ravine not to disturb them for a few shots. A flock of 6 and one of them remained perched in a tree while I was present. One displayed the whole time I was there too. A couple wandered around feeding, a couple just rested around the area they were in. It was nice to see them just doing what they do. It was a gloomy day, temps around 30, low winds out there, not bad for the end of November. Images were taken on November 30, 2018.

Wild Turkey nest with eggs Marquette County Wisconsin May 24, 2014

While doing some birding in Marquette County today I accidentally flushed a Wild Turkey from its nest. I did not realize the nest was there with a turkey sitting on eggs. It was well hidden unless you were standing right in front of it. Interesting that the nest is in an open field with little vegetation other than this patch of native grass in an 8 foot circle, grasses 3 feet high. The nest was made of dead grasses. I quickly took a few images of the nest and eggs and left the area. This nest contained 13 eggs. In some images near the bottom of this post a came across a Wild Turkey nest back in May of 2011. This was on the same piece of land, but a heavily wooded area, nest was in a broken off older tree top laying on the ground next to a log. That nest also held 13 eggs but was made of leaves. The size of Wild Turkeys eggs are 1.6″ -1.9″ wide by a length of 1.9″- 2.7″. Typically Wild Turkeys build their nests on the ground, in a 1″ deep scrap made of material in the area of the nest site.
