Black-necked Stilts with chicks at Horicon Marsh in Dodge County Wisconsin on June 2, 2026

I had not been up to Horicon Marsh yet this year so a last minute decision was made early in the morning to make the trip up. I arrived at about 6:15 AM. My first stop was Old Marsh Road on the east side. A species I was hoping to see was present. The Black-necked Stilts and there were young ones too, the chicks! There were many Black-necked Stilts in the area they are typically seen there. I saw two sets of chicks with adults together and the rest of the Black-necked Stilts were on or near nests. A Virginia Rail chick was also present. Hwy 49 on the north end also had a nesting pair of Black-necked Stilts with 2 chicks that I saw. First time I saw them in that area. Many other birds were present to enjoy. It was a beautiful morning early, with pleasant temperatures and sunny skies too. Images were taken on June 2, 2026.

I left Wisconsin for Colorado back in the early 70’s and enjoyed BN Stilts out there for 30 years – they were unheard of in WI during that time, and it has been thrilling to know they nest here now – isolated in their area for doing so, but here with regularity nonetheless – your photos of the stilts are amazing, beautiful, and inspiring – thank you so much for sharing!!!
